Gore campaign faults GOP speakers
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- Not willing to let Republican claims go
unchallenged, Al Gore's campaign late Monday critiqued the GOP's national
convention, saying speakers Laura Bush and retired Gen. Colin Powell had
glossed over George W. Bush's record as governor of Texas.
"Tonight, Colin Powell said that America cannot leave any child behind,"
a Gore 2000 campaign release proclaimed. "He called for ensuring that every
child in America has access to health care. He called for testing teachers and
for federal money to help build schools. Tonight, Colin Powell called for a
The Democratic campaign also took issue with Mrs. Bush's speech, saying
that the Texas governor had not done enough to improve schools in his state.
"Bush has failed to propose any additional funding for Head Start and has
not proposed increasing enrollment," the statement read.
