VH1/Vogue dole out fashion awards

December 6, 1999

(CNN) -- Actress Heather Graham, singer Jennifer Lopez and Gucci designer Tom Ford are among those who have a shiny new accessory to add to their closets -- a VH1/Vogue Fashion Award.

The awards, handed out in New York Sunday night during a two-hour telecast, honor the "most fashionable" in the worlds of TV, movies, music and, of course, the designing world. In their first collaboration, tastemaker Vogue gave catwalk credibility to the struggling VH1 production, now in its fifth year.

Hosted by actress Heather Locklear of ABC's "Spin City" and music mogul Sean "Puffy" Combs, the show combined legions of models strutting the stage with flashy video clips of nominees and musical performances from Foo Fighters, Beck, Jennifer Lopez, TLC and others.

At times, the show lumbered awkwardly, as when members of the band Garbage, winners for Visionary Video for "Special," were asked to stretch their acceptance speech to lengthen the broadcast, which was running fast. Combs appeared to be a reticent host, making few appearances beyond a stilted introduction with Locklear at the beginning of the show.

Presenters included Madonna, Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, Sharon Stone, Claire Danes and Rupert Everett. Announcing the winners, several presenters jokingly referred to copies of The New York Post and Vogue instead of the envelopes. The magazine, intended to go on newsstands Monday, accidentally went out before the show. The Post published a list of the winners on Saturday.

Gucci designer Tom Ford took the crowning award of the evening, Womenswear Designer of the Year, beating Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani and Donna Karan.

Model of the year honors went to Gisele Bundchen, a 19-year-old from Brazil.
