Connie Nielsen: 'The Hunted'
By Amy Powell
(Instyle) -- "She is strong and smart while still being feminine," says hairstylist Gail Ryan of Connie Nielsen's character Abby Durrell in "The Hunted." The Danish beauty plays a gutsy American FBI special agent who heads up a squad that is trying to capture Aaron Hallam (Benicio Del Toro), a military assassin who is haunted by his memories and is on a killing spree. Throughout this bloody manhunt, which takes them through the wet woods and city streets of Portland, Oregon, Nielsen manages to always look fresh and quite stunning. "Connie is a beautiful woman, and we were just trying to keep her natural," says makeup artist Bob Ryan. Does she get the bad guy? Let's just say that teaming up with Tommy Lee Jones didn't hurt. MakeupRyan prepped Nielsen's skin with La Mer products: the Face Serum, Crème de la Mer and the Eye Balm. Next, he applied a thin mixture of Chanel liquid foundations in Alabaster, Porcelain and Fawn all over the face and blended YSL Touche Eclat No. 1 Luminous Radiance concealer under the eyes, around the mouth and a bit on the forehead and chin. Using a large brush he set the foundation with T. LeClerc loose powder in Translucide. For a natural, rosy tone, Ryan added Benefit Benetint stain to the cheeks. The eyes were also kept natural-looking with a mixture of MAC Satin eye shadows in Mylar and Brulé (all over the lids) and MAC Matte eye shadow in Soft Brown (below the lower lash lines and the outer corners of the lids). He then applied a thin line of MAC Crème liner in Grafite on the upper lash lines with a fine brush. Finally, her eyelashes were curled and pumped up with YSL Luxurious mascara in High Density Black. MAC lip pencil in Spice and Benefit Benetint stain on the lips completed the look. Hair"For the hair we wanted it to look like she just air-dried it and put a comb through it," says Ryan. To start, Ryan cut and highlighted Nielsen's hair. "I added some layers in the back for a bit of height and movement," she says. Nielsen arrived daily with damp hair and Ryan first added Phyto Phytofix Setting Gel then dried it with a blow-dryer. For extra lift at the roots she separated small sections of hair around the face, twisted them and set them into pin curls. After her makeup was done the curls were taken out and finger-combed loosely into place. Ryan then used a waving iron on sections of hair all over the head to add more body and texture.
